Checklist

Schools can use this checklist in order to evaluate the information security issues that are related to the entire school as well as co-operation between school and the home. In addition, the checklist provides tips regarding which topics should be discussed with pupils. The checklist is intended for use as a tool by teachers, and it is advisable to go through it together with the entire school.

The entire school

  1. Are information confidentiality and information security issues included in the school’s curriculum and information strategy?
  2. Does the school have person(s) in charge of information security?
  3. Are the school’s computers protected?
    - up-to-date operating system
    - firewall
    - anti-virus software
  4. Have all the pupils and teachers been educated in matters of information security by means of, for instance, reading the tietoturvakoulu.fi site?

Pupils

  1. Does the school provide personal user IDs and passwords to all students and provide instructions as to their use?
  2. Have the pupils been instructed regarding the confidentiality of user IDs and passwords?
  3. Have the basics of copyright been discussed with the students? www.piraattitehdas.fi (in Finnish and Swedish)
  4. Have the pupils been advised that music, movies or games must not be illicitly downloaded from the web?
  5. Has it been agreed with the pupils that school computers should only be used for the purpose of study?
  6. Have ground rules for using one’s own CDs, memory sticks, disks etc. been established at the school?
  7. Have the pupils been encouraged to tell their teachers or parents if they encounter disturbing things on the internet?
  8. Have the ground rules for publishing your own and other people’s pictures been discussed with the students?
  9. Has a discussion been held with the students on what personal information is and what may result from providing it online?

Co-operation between the school and home

  1. Have parents been informed of the school’s ground rules for IT use and information security?
  2. Have students and their parents been asked for permission to post pictures, the students’ work or schedules on the web? Permission request model
